Chesapeake firm to provide temporary kitchen at tornado damaged school

Kitchen Corps Inc. won a contract from Shaw University in Raleigh to supply the temporary kitchen, which can handle up to 1,000 meals three times per day, from July until January.

The historically black school canceled the remainder of its spring semester after an April 16 tornado caused extensive damage to two dormitories, a classroom building and the student center, which housed its cafeteria. No one was killed or severely injured at the school, but there were minor injuries.

Kitchen Corps will set up a 2,080-square-foot temporary kitchen that includes production and preparation areas, as well as dishwashing, refrigeration, freezer and dry storage spaces.

Kitchen Corps provides such kitchen facilities to universities, military bases, correctional facilities, hospitals, businesses and disaster relief organizations that are experiencing new construction, renovation, long-term events or a disaster. For example, it has a temporary kitchen and dining facility at St. Christopher’s School during the renovation of the Richmond private school’s dining hall.
